Microsoft Office Survey–Interim results

On December 22nd I posted a survey of Microsoft Office usage. Although its only been a week and half I thought I would post the results, as there have been some surprises for me. If you haven’t already done so, you can complete the survey here.

As of today (20110103) 41 people have completed the survey. Most have been male (77.5%) and most have been between 41 and 50 years old (39%).

Office 2007 and Office 2010 make up the most common versions used by respondents (41% and 33% respectively) and between them account for 74% of respondents. One person (2.5%) uses Office 2008 for the Mac.

One interesting result is the almost 50/50 split between those who use Outlook as their main email client (53.6%) and those who don’t. This suggests to me that perhaps those that don’t use outlook are using MS Office at home.

Perhaps the most interesting result for me is the applications that people use. Not surprisingly, Word and Excel are the most commonly used (38 and 37 users respectively). What did surprise me was the number of people using Access and Publisher (12 and 14 respectively).

Strangely, although only 8 people have said that they use Project, twenty people have responded to the question about which version of Project they use. 30% use Project Standard, 15% use Project Professional / Enterprise, while 55% don’t know which version they use.

So far, only 25% of respondents use SharePoint of some flavour.

Moving forward I would be interested to find out where people use MS Office – at work, at home or both. If Access retains its level of use then there might be an opening for more Access related posts, although I would be keen to concentrate on Project and SharePoint.
